Camping can be a ton of fun. You get to spend time out in nature, under the stars. Whether you camp in a tent or a cabin, there's just something about being in a more primitive accommodation that makes you feel human and connected to the earth. But as fun as camping is, it does also require certain skills. The first time you camp, it is important to follow a few tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable time.
Camp at a campground
Some people eventually like to camp way out in the wilderness, off the beaten path, and in remote areas. This can be fun, but it also means you're entirely at the whim of nature. When you're new to camping, it is far better to camp at a campground where there are other people, amenities, and roads around. Most campgrounds have both cabins and tent spots you can rent, so you can go as rustic as you like. Camping spots are almost always affordably priced, too.
Keep it simple when it comes to food
Cooking over a fire is fun, but it's also easy to burn your food and ruin your meal. So, keep your meals simple. Cook hot dogs or veggie dogs over the fire, or just stick with sandwiches. If you do want to try and cook more complex meals, make sure you bring a backup, such as PB&J sandwiches, just in case something goes wrong with your main meal.
Pack for all weather
The weather can change quickly. Often, it gets colder overnight than expected, and during the day, it can get really hot inside a tent with the sun beating down. So, you should always pack lots of extra clothing and prepare for all temps when you camp. Bring layer-able pieces, and you can layer to your desired level of comfort at any one time.
Bring low-tech entertainment
Camping is a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As such, you probably won't want to be on your phone the whole time. You might not even have service in remote camping areas! So, bring some low-tech entertainment like a few books, a board game, or cards.
With the tips above, your first camping trip should be safe and comfortable. Once you've experienced camping for the first time, you can make changes and improvements to be better prepared for the future. You've got this!
